Educational Services
The education program is designed for day and residential students who are unable to participate in public school education due to their particular special needs. The greatest fulfillment of each child's educational potential is the primary goal. The instructional program is designed to most effectively diagnose and remediate the special learning difficulties the students exhibit. The curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts Department of Education's curriculum frameworks. In addition, the education program includes the following services:
- Individual psychotherapy
- Speech and language therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Title 1 Reading services
Highly trained Behavior Management Counselors are on staff to help students who experience challenging behavioral difficulties. These Behavior Management Counselors supervise the Quiet Rooms, which offer students a safe place to go to when they are unable to manage themselves appropriately in the classroom setting. With the help of the Behavior Management Counselors, the students are able to regain their composure and transition back to class.
The school utilizes various techniques to help motivate students to learn. A point system allows the students to earn points that can be spent at a School Store or toward a privilege such as a school job, special activity or a special treat.
Children participate in various school events such as:
- free paperback book distributions
- math and spelling bees
- athletic field days
- science fairs
- history fairs
- special guests
These are some of the favorites which also inspire a sense of school spirit throughout the school year.
The Massachusetts Department of Education has approved the education program at St. Ann's Home and School as an educational facility for children with special needs under Massachusetts G.L. Chapter 766.
